Cleaner Cleaning

The most satisfying part of my journey to eliminate unnecessary plastic has been the transition from commercial cleaning products to making my own. It all started with this wonderful little book.

Make Your Place, by Raleigh Briggs is the perfect starting point for anyone wishing to make the switch. I continue to revel in how easy it is to make basic cleaning products and how effective they are. There is no need to complicate things with toxic chemicals and ingredient lists we don’t understand. I also love the aesthetic of a clear glass bottle filled with herbs vs a plastic container with yet another intrusion of advertising.

Below are a few of my favorite concoctions.

Bath and Tile Scrub:

1 cup baking soda

1/4 cup liquid castile soap

1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide

All-Purpose Cleaner: (from Make Your Place, by Raleigh Briggs)

1 tsp liquid castile soap

2 tbsp white vinegar

1 tsp borax

2 cups hot water

a few drops of essential oils of your choice, or a few sprigs of fresh or dried herbs

Window Cleaner: (from Make Your Place, by Raleigh Briggs)

3 tsp liquid castile soap

3/4 cup white vinegar

1/2 tsp baking soda

4-8 drops lemon oil
